Treating Sleep Apnea

Do you or your spouse snore?!  Does it wake you or them up at night?

Sleep apnea affects the way you breathe when you're sleeping.  In untreated sleep apnea, breathing is briefly interrupted or becomes very shallow during sleep.  These pauses can last about 10-30 seconds and can occur up to hundreds of times a night!  This leads to less time in deep sleep which we need to be energetic and productive the next day.  This chronic sleep deprivation results in daytime sleepiness, slow reflexes, poor concentration, and increased risk for accidents!  If you have noticed these signs or symptoms of sleep apnea, see your physician immediately to determine an official diagnosis.

Treatment for sleep apnea has come a long way...  you may want to discuss with your doctor whether a breathing device is necessary.  Mild to moderate sleep apnea can be successfully treated with a dental device worn at night to keep your airway open.  Talk to Dr. Gassen about your diagnosis and see if a dental device may work for you.  He works with many doctors in Jefferson City to determine the best treatment for their mutual patients.  We all deserve a good night's sleep!    Click on this link to learn more about treating sleep apnea!
